Tonight during the Q & A (with writer/director Michel Hazanavicius) following the prescreening of The Artist, a fellow viewer brought up another one of my favorite films of the year, Hugo. The viewer mentioned that both films are (in their own way) an ode to silent films.
I believe that quality is why I find both Hugo and The Artist to be so memorable. It may be because my one true love in life is the very thing these movies revel in or it may be the fact that the world of movies, at this very moment, is in a transitional period (analog vs. digital) much like the one that took place in the late 20’s (silent vs. talkie).
Similarites aside, both films are vastly different and wonderful in their own right and I hope others will give them the time of day when they are released theatrically. It is important to remember and cherish all that the past has done for the world of entertainment WHILE ALSO embracing the future.
In conclusion, if you are in love with the art of classic storytelling, go see The Artist. If you are in love with the warmth movie magic brings, see Hugo. If you can, see both. You will not be sorry.
